Natural ways to take care of your hair

Taking care of your hair can be done effectively at home naturally. Here are just some of the things you can do to take the best care of your hair naturally.

    Regular trims

It’s no secret that maintaining regular trims is a great way to maintain healthy hair. Whether you cut your hair yourself or visit a salon, be sure to get your hair cut relatively regularly to avoid having dead or dry ends.

If you do cut your hair yourself don’t be tempted to do so with the kitchen scissors, be sure to use high-quality hair cutting scissors to achieve a sharp cut.

    Natural hair masks

Hair masks are an excellent way to keep your hair healthy and smooth. Unfortunately, many shop bought hair masks contain silicones and parabens which aren’t good for your hair. However, there are plenty of natural hair mask recipes that can be made at home that do a very effective job of nourishing your hair.

    Hair oil

If you aren’t up for whipping up a homemade hair mask, a good quality hair oil may be more up your street. Oiling your hair with natural oil, such as coconut, has countless benefits for your hair. Not only does it help to protect your hair from heat and keep it strong and moisturised, but it can also help promote hair growth too.

Look up reviews online to see which particular oil would work best for your hair type and consider testing some samples before investing in a full-size product.

    Reduce heat usage

It’s common knowledge that heat is bad for your hair, so reducing your usage of heat is a good way to increase the healthiness of your hair.

Try to air dry your hair as much as possible as an easy way to reduce heat exposure. If you use heat for styling, consider investing in low-temperature styling tools or heatless tools as an alternative, healthy way to style your hair.

    Choose your brush wisely

When thinking about how to maintain healthy hair, it is easy to overlook your hairbrush, but this can play a big part in your hair’s health. Different hair types require different things from a hairbrush so it is important to do some research into the type of brush that will work best for your hair type.

Once you have found the right brush for you, make sure you are using the brush carefully and aren’t pulling on the hair too harshly which can cause loss and strain on the hair.

    Drink plenty of water

We are often told how crucial drinking plenty of water is for achieving healthy skin, but water is also imperative for healthy hair too. If you want hydrated hair, then working from the inside out is the best way to go. Aim to be drinking at least 2 litres of water per day.

    Protect from the sun

Similar to water, it is often our skin we think of when it comes to sun protection. However, it is important to also consider your hair when you are sunbathing or out in the sun for extended periods of time.

The sun can cause hair to significantly dry out so consider wearing a cap to prevent this. The same can be said if you swim regularly as the chlorinated water is highly likely to damage your hair, therefore, wearing a swimming cap is a good way to help prevent damage.

    Invest in silk

Silk is good for your hair for many reasons; unlike cotton or elastic, it doesn’t pull on your hair causing frizz but instead allows your hair to glide over or through it. This prevents both frizzing and tangling. Investing in a good quality silk pillowcase and silk scrunchies can do wonders for your hair.

    Opt for microfibre

We are all guilty of making the mistake of carefully washing our hair and then undoing the work by harshly drying it with a rough towel. Opting for a microfibre towel instead is a much better alternative. Similar to silk, microfibre is much gentler on hair, causing less frizz and snagging.

    Reduce your shower temperature

As much as we all love a hot shower, especially during the winter months, if your showers are too hot, they will strip your hair of its natural oils. Try reducing the temperature that you shower at and try rinsing your hair with cold water at the end of your shower if you can.
